New Tracks Being Put Down in Birmingham

On November 5 a ceremony was held which signalled that new tracks were to be put down in Birmingham city centre.  The new tracks will take trams from Snow Hill station to New Street. The Midland Metro extension and new Urbos 3 tram fleet will in total cost £127 million but also create 1,300 new jobs and expand the West Midlands economy.

The extension will be finished by 2015.

Councillor Roger Horton said: “Trams are very much a transport mode of the future and this is a significant and symbolic moment for the Metro extension.

“In the year that sees the 60th anniversary of the last tram running in Birmingham we are seeing the first tracks go in for a new 21st century system.”
